Half Way Through My Last Semester March 24, 2009

Oklahoma State University is more than half way through its spring semester. And for me, that means I have six weeks of classes left of my college career. So far, I have learned more than I thought possible about social media in Bill Handy’s class. I used to not want to be a part of all the new social media Web sites out there. I had my e-mail and Facebook, I was content. But now I am an active user of Twitter, Youtube, I have my resume posted at and I love my new G-Mail account.

I have to thank Bill for making us sign up to these sites. Social media has taken the PR industry by storm and it’s better to jump on the band wagon now then later. Every agency or firm is on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter and if they’re not, then they are behind. Now a days,  a computer can be a person’s link to the the outside world and the Internet is how they obtain most of their knowledge about a company. So if the company is not available through certain media Web sites, they can forget about expanding their following or clientele. Since I have been applying for jobs, I have noticed that being social media savvy is a huge plus. Again, thank you Bill. I’d say in three years tops, it will be a requirement for a public relations graduate to obtain social media knowledge.

I look forward to the second half of this semester and know I will continue to gain experience as well as become comfortable with more aspects of social media.

A couple of weeks ago in Social Media, our professor showed us another way to make ourselves more visible to potential employers. The new in-demand camera is called the Flip. It’s roughly the size of a Blackberry and relatively cheap. Apparently you can film something wherever and from there send it to your e-mail or upload it to a Web site in a matter of minutes.

We did a test run with Bill and Max, a fellow student. They recorded a four minute conversation about Max’s Web site, his skills and what he hopes to do once he graduates. Then, Bill showed us how simple it is to upload the video to the Internet and poof, you have a version of your resume online for all to see. Not even 10 years ago job seekers sent their resumes to companies via mail. Now its e-mail and posting resumes online that can include portfolios, previous works and even pictures/videos of yourself.

As an upcoming graduate, I have sent my resume via e-mail to numerous companies and I have my resume on as well as It is simple enough to do and I think now a days it is imperative to do. Bill showing us about the Flip camera is just one more way we can show off our talents to employers and let’s face it with the competition today, a person must use every tool there is to broadcast themselves and their talent.

Apple never ceases to amaze me March 3, 2009

I have recently seen Apple’s commercials advertising their latest Macbook. The basis of this Mac’s appeal is how Eco-friendly it is. According to Apple’s commercial and Web site, the Mac’s aluminum and glass enclosure is so advanced, it is completely recyclable. And is so efficient, it runs on the quarter of the power of a single light bulb. Also it’s made without harmful toxins that are made with other computers like mercury.

I am the owner of an HP. I cannot complain at all. I have had it for two years, no problems whatsoever and I am pretty fond of it. However, I will admit that Apple has the coolest gadgets and I am envious of my roommates who both own Macs. Apple always seems to be one step ahead of everyone else. The IPOD, who doesn’t love it? I could not workout without mine. The iphone, the only thing I can say bad about it is that AT&T has a lock on it for two more years, so I am forced to wait. And here it is, just further proof the Apple rules the electronic world with this savvy and Eco-friendly Mac. It will only be a matter of time before copycats come out with their versions just like the Zune  vs. the IPOD or Blackberry’s new touch screen vs. the iphone.

The more I think about it, it’s not just that Apple’s products are easy to use and let’s admit it, pretty to look at, it’s how they market themselves. The stores are pristine clean. The commercials are simple and to the point but with a subtle coolness factor. AND before one of the products is debut, everyone and their mom is talking about it! People are lined up outside their stores eagerly waiting to be one of the first owners. As public relations senior, I would love to be apart of that marketing department.

I would like to take this opportunity to say bravo Apple for once again making the masses go “ohhh” and “awww.” I cannot wait to see what you come out with next.

THE Expo March 2, 2009

Oklahoma State had its very own communications networking expo this past Thursday. I think it went wonderfully and I can only hope the JB school will hostat least one or two a year. This expo was organized by two JB students. Not only did they successfully organize this event they did it despite the university’s negative endorsement. I never got the full story about why OSU did not want a “networking expo” taking place without their consent. Apparently some OSU officials felt the students would conduct themselves in a manner unbecoming. And let me just say, that yes as a PR senior actively seeking a job I would act horribly in front of potential employers, professors and my fellow students. (hint the sarcasm)

Anyways, I want to congratulate the two students who created this event that benefitedso many of us. I tried to make my way to all the tables. Every company representative that I spoke with was excited to be there and gave very helpful advice. I went to OSU’s career fair at the beginning of January and hardly found employers that were seeking public relations/marketing professionals. It was so awesome to be at this expo surrounded by representatives that were looking for communication specialists. I felt much more comfortable and eager to talk with people at the expo.

Last but certainly not least, I would like to brag on my fellow Journalism and Broadcasting peers on our excellent and stylish attire. I have always said it and Thursday was further proof that we our the best -dressed major at the university. 🙂
